Pastor, Rev. Dr. Felipe N. Martínez

Felipe began his call as our pastor right before Christmas 2015. Felipe has ministered in a congregational setting (pastor of First Presbyterian Church in St. Anne, Illinois) as well as in a Presbytery-wide capacity (Associate Executive Presbyter of Whitewater Valley Presbytery, Indiana; Transitional General Presbyter and Stated Clerk of Great Rivers Presbytery, Illinois). Felipe attended Austin College in Sherman, Texas and McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. Felipe's identity in ministry is as a pastor (who happens to preach, teach, administer, etc.) so he views his work in congregation and community from a perspective of care and relationship-building. While it is true that Felipe is a glass-half-full kind of person, that perspective comes not from a shallow optimism but rather from a deeper, faithful hope rooted in God's active mercy and grace in the world (even in confusing or traumatic times).
The vision of First Presbyterian Church of Columbus connects well with Felipe's vision that God has gifted everyone in the community, and God calls us to be connected. Felipe works from a sense of God's abundance all around us, instead of a sense of perceived scarcity. Felipe is very excited to make connections with the residents of Columbus to discover and celebrate how God has gifted them.
Felipe, his wife Tracy Heaton de Martinez, and their two sons, Montez and Michael, are looking forward to being a part of this wonderful community. You might see them around town: the boys riding their bikes (or Montez learning how to drive); Felipe running a few miles in preparation for a half or full marathon; Tracy active in civic and community work; or one or all of them out walking their dog Bella.
